After dental school, he joined the United States Air Force, completing an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, followed by three years as a clinical general dentist at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota. Upon leaving the Air Force, he returned to Gering, holding dual positions as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry and as a public health dentist at the Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska. He oversaw student rotations and public health initiatives for three years before buying his father's dental practice, Gering Dental Clinic. After 15 years in private practice, he realized the business of owning a practice was not for him, so he decided to sell the business and retire.

During his career, Dr. Schlothauer served 3 years as a delegate to the ADA's Leadership Conference in Washington DC, served two terms as President of local West District Dental Society, served on the Nebraska Dental Association House of Delegates for 4 years, the Board of Trustees for 4 years and then was elected President Elect, Vice President and then President of the Nebraska Dental Association for the 2014-2017 term.

While in dental school I completed a short clinical rotation at Healing Hands, during which time I was able to learn about the important mission of Healing Hands.  It just so happened that Healing Hands was looking to hire another dentist at the time, I knew this was something that I wanted to be a part of.  Having met my wife at ETSU we both fell in love with the Tri-Cities area in college and were very excited about the opportunity to move back to the area.

I am a member of the American Dental Association and the Tennessee Dental Association. (I will be joining the First District Dental Society, but I don’t think I’m officially a member yet).

My wife, Brianna, and I have been married since June 2020, we enjoy traveling, visiting National Parks, and watching movies.  We also enjoy spending time with our three-legged black lab Sam Elliot.  My personal hobbies include watching football, hockey, and NASCAR, fishing, and playing golf.
